Cannibal Tours (1987)
Film screening at the Deutsches Filminstitut und Filmmuseum in Frankfurt in collaboration with the Weltkulturen Museum of this superb documentary. “Nothing in a foreign land is as alien as the stranger visiting it”, so begins Cannibal Tours, a classic work of “reverse ethnography.” A group of tourists has booked a trip to Papua New Guinea, seeking an encounter with the “savage” and the “primal.” With dry humor and keen observation, Dennis O’Rourke examines this encounter, giving a voice to both the indigenous population and the European tourists.
