Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology

We are delighted to welcome the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology as a participant of the WanBel global network.

Founded in 1884 the MAA contains two million years of human history, one million artefacts and countless astonishing stories.

The museum’s PNG collection includes several major field collections such as from the 1898 Cambridge expedition to the Torres Strait, by Northcote W. Thomas and by Gregory Bateson from the Sepik River in the 1930’s. In addition the museum’s photography collection includes over 16,000 images relating to PNG.

The Oceanic objects exhibition Pacific Currents was updated in 2018 and this re-display highlights the dynamic nature of communities, while acknowledging people’s close attachment to and knowledge of local environments.
