National Museum of Scotland
We are delighted to welcome the National Museum of Scotland as a participant of the WanBel global project.
The National Museum of Scotland holds one of the country’s most significant and wide-ranging collections from Papua New Guinea, comprising more than 1,000 objects acquired during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the highlights are exceptional early malagan carvings and a very rare Torres Strait female figure from Erub (Darnley) Island.
The collection spans the broadest geographical range of Papua New Guinea material held in Scotland, reflecting a history of focused collecting and active engagement with the region. Through its preservation, research, and display of these works, the museum plays an important role in documenting and presenting the cultural heritage of Papua New Guinea and the wider Pacific within an international context.
