Musée d'histoire naturelle de La Rochelle

We are delighted to welcome Musée d'histoire naturelle de La Rochelle as a participant of the WanBel global project.

The Natural History Museum of La Rochelle holds a remarkable legacy shaped by major 19th-century scientific and ethnographic expeditions and enriched over time through both institutional and private donations. Its Oceanic collections include a notable selection of works from Papua New Guinea, acquired through early navigation and research as well as through generous gifts.

Masks, ornaments, and both ritual and functional objects highlight the vibrant cultural worlds of Pacific societies while reflecting the close connections between scientific exploration and ethnographic discovery. With this enduring history and its continuing commitment to presenting non-European cultures, the museum plays a vital role in preserving and sharing Papua New Guinea’s artistic and cultural heritage.
