University of Aberdeen, University Collections
We are delighted to welcome the University Collections of the University of Aberdeen, as a participant of the WanBel global project.
The University of Aberdeen’s Papua New Guinea holdings, largely collected by Sir William MacGregor in the late 19th century, represent one of the most important and earliest systematic collections from the region. Comprising more than 3,000 objects, the collection reflects MacGregor’s vision that these works stand as shared patrimony for the people of Papua New Guinea and the wider world.
Historically divided between the University of Aberdeen, the Queensland Museum in Australia, and the National Museum and Art Gallery in Port Moresby, this legacy underscores the international significance of these collections.
Today, the University of Aberdeen Museums continue to preserve and research this heritage, inspiring curiosity and advancing understanding of Papua New Guinea’s cultural traditions within a global context.
