National Film Institute
The National Film Institute’s role is to document and preserve Papua New Guinea's cultural heritage through film. The institution’s antecedent was the Skul Bilong Wokim Piksa (School for Making Pictures), established in 1979. After the National Cultural Commission Act 1994, it became the National Film Institute. The Institute is based in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province,
The NFI is undertaking a four-year project with the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) to restore and publish films from the NFI archive. In November 2025, the two institutions released the restored version of Tukana – Husat I Asua (Who’s to Blame, 1982), one of PNG’s earliest narrative feature films. The film was digitally restored by the NFSA in partnership with Spectrum Films and presented to the NFI as a gift marking the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s independence.
The NFI is also responsible for the issuing of permits and visas for foreign commercial film companies seeking to operate in PNG.
