Missiemuseum Steyl

Missiemuseum Steyl

We are delighted to welcome Missiemuseum Steyl as a participant of the WanBel global project.

Although modest in scale, the Missiemuseum’s Papua New Guinea collection offers rare insight and intimacy, featuring finely preserved masks, figures, and adornments that reflect the spiritual and everyday life of rural communities. Among its most distinctive works are rare feather mosaics from the Keram River, collected in the early 20th century by missionary Franz Kirschbaum.

Through careful preservation and thoughtful interpretation, the museum has created space for new conversations around ethnographic materials, deepening understanding of local beliefs and traditions. This collection gives the Missiemuseum a distinctive role within the wider network of institutions dedicated to Papua New Guinea’s cultural heritage.

For WanBel the museum is making a display concerning provenance research on seven overmodelled skulls collected from the Sepik

The museum is currently showing The Collection Resists, a series of artist interventions in and explorations of the museum collection, including the PNG skulls.
