Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac
We are delighted to welcome Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac as a participant of the WanBel global project.
The Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac is home to one of the world’s most important collections from PNG, reflecting decades of preservation, research, and public engagement. The stunning permanent collection in the Jean Nouvel designed building (2006) and landmark exhibitions such as Sepik (2015), Kwoma Rouge (2008) have highlighted the museum’s dedication to PNG’s historical and contemporary artistic traditions. Touring shows have taken highlights from the collection to Asia with Arts of the Great Ocean, in Shanghai (2019), Seoul (2025) and Sanxingdui, China (2026) and to Mexico City (2023).
The upcoming Plumes from Paradise exhibition sheds light on the historic trade in the dazzling bird of paradise feathers from the highlands of New Guinea across Asia and the world. Bringing together nearly 190 works - jewellery, paintings, stuffed specimens, fashion items and accessories, objets d'art and illustrated works - the exhibition combines perspectives from natural history, art, ethnology, fashion and ecology to tell this fascinating story.

To accompany the exhibition Plumes from Paradise the Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac in Paris is hosting a two day symposium, From Forests to Worlds. The symposium, held over a day and a half, proposes a transdisciplinary reflection bringing together anthropology, ecology, and the arts. It focuses on the place of birds in local natural and cultural environments, as well as on their exogenous reappropriations. A particular focus on New Guinea will be complemented by perspectives from Amazonian and European worlds.
