Peabody Museum, Harvard University
We are delighted to welcome the Peabody Museum at the Harvard University as a participant of the WanBel global project.
The Peabody Museum at Harvard is recognized as a leading center for Pacific and Papua New Guinea research, with collections shaped by landmark fieldwork such as the 1961 Harvard-Peabody New Guinea Expedition. Led by anthropologists and filmmakers, this expedition generated an extensive body of photographic records and cultural materials that together provide a vivid perspective on the diversity of Papua New Guinea’s communities and traditions.
The museum’s Pacific holdings include plaited bags, shields, and ceremonial objects along with an extensive photography collection and archive which together highlight the artistry and cultural depth of the region.

Today, the Peabody continues to advance ethical stewardship and scholarly research, working closely with indigenous and diaspora communities to ensure collections are interpreted with care and accuracy. Through its collections and initiatives, the museum offers an enduring resource for understanding Papua New Guinea’s cultural heritage within a broader global context.
PNG art and objects feature extensively in two displays at the museum.
The exhibition Uncovering Pacific Pasts explores the role of Harvard scholars in the development of anthropology in the Pacific.
