Museum der Kulturen Basel
We are delighted to welcome the Museum der Kulturen Basel as a participant of the Wan Bel global project.
The Museum der Kulturen Basel (MKB) is recognized as one of Europe’s foremost custodians of Papua New Guinea’s cultural heritage. Its collection is distinguished by the iconic and monumental Abelam ceremonial house façade from Kalabu village, alongside an extensive body of works enriched by the field research of scholars such as Bühler, Forge, Kaufmann, and Wirtz.
MKB’s holdings are further enhanced by over 300,000 photographs and 400 films and sound recordings, providing an unparalleled resource for research, teaching, and interpretation. Complementing its state-of-the-art conservation facilities, the museum is widely respected for its innovative exhibitions, authoritative contributions to debates on restitution, and collaborative approach to scholarship. Together, these efforts establish MKB as a global reference point for Melanesian studies and a vital space for rethinking the role of collections in shaping cultural understanding.
