St. Louis Art Museum (SLAM)

We are delighted to welcome the the St. Louis Art Museum (SLAM) as a participant of the WanBel global project.

SLAM, an encyclopaedic institution dedicated to art across time and cultures, houses a significant Oceanic art collection with a strength in art from Papua New Guinea. Among the museum’s rare masterpieces are the unique Korewori inyai-ewa bird figure and a superb uli figure from New Ireland, alongside important spirit boards, ceremonial masks, and other exceptional works.

SLAM stewards 382 works of art from Papua New Guinea. Selections are on view in the museum’s 2,500 square-foot Oceanic art galleries that were renovated in 2021. Through its long-term displays and historic exhibitions like New Ireland: Art of the South Pacific (2006-2007), SLAM demonstrates an enduring commitment to preserving and sharing Papua New Guinea’s artistic heritage within a global context.
